Gregor Mikuž is very proud of his pure Pohorje water percolating up from deep inside the mountain range his vineyards straddle. It is drawn from an ancient well opposite the door of the 200 year old cellar where he makes his wine. That water ‘is probably what attracted people to live here, rather than other way around,’ he reckons.

He and his wife, Tjaša, have farmed their 4.5 ha vineyard organically now for 10 years, 5 of those under certification. Stylistically their wines follow on organic philosophically adhering to spontaneous natural ferments and minimal intervention.

Although his parents bought the property in 1995 and continue to live in the 18C farm house, Gregor and Tjaša only recently established production on the property in 2014. Previous they were ‘Garagistas’ making wine from Tjaša’s sister’s vineyard nearby.

The main vineyard with 30 year old vines and quartz enriched soil, fronts the property cascading down the south-facing hill below. A newer vineyard, primarily planted in Sauvignon Blanc, sits on hills above within a bowl shaped configuration allowing room for an additional 4 ha expansion. Both are exposed to Pohorje’s constant, cold winds that keep acidity high and counter-balance the heat rising from Pannonian Plains below.

M-Vina wines focus is primarily on Sauvignon Blanc, although Chardonnay, Laski and Pinot Gris are also grown. All wines share stylistic similarities: organic, wild yeast ferments, minimal handling, on lees for a year, low yields at 1-1.5kg per plant… resulting in complex, interesting, edgy wines that dance on the savory side.
