Pedra Cancela Wines
Pedra Cancela Branco 2010 This beautifully balanced wine offers up a lovely mix of freshness and florals from 40% Malvasina-Fina and rich textures from 60% Encruzado. Beyond subtle spicy florals, it’s creamy smooth with a long lasting, finely tapered melt-away finish. It’s very much about elegance, polish and finesse. Tasted 10.2012
Pedra Cancela Reserva 2008 15% Considering its high alcohol level, this blend of 60% Touriga, 30% Alfrocheiro and 20% Roriz using Modern and Traditional styles shows remarkable balance and great integration. Savory red fruits and florals greet the nose, offering rich, full, expansive flavors of red and black fruits and a firm, but finely polished structure. Tasted 10.2012
Pedra Cancela Reserva 2009 14% From a similar blend but hotter year than 2008, comparatively this shows more minerality than fruit on the nose and less concentration and power in the mouth. Offering a similar mix of savory red and black fruits, it is relatively finer, tighter, smoother and more elegant than the 2008. Tasted 10.2012
Pedra Cancela Touriga Nacional 2008 15% This is a huge, highly concentrated, alcoholic wine. Spirity, leafy and floral on the nose, full, rich and deeply viscous in the mouth, packed with sappy, blackberry flavors. In contrast to the 2008 Reserva, I found this wine dominated by alcohol and out of balance for it, but others may love this style. With time in bottle it may all come together. Tasted 10.2012
Pedra Cancela Touriga Nacional 2009 14.3% A balanced nose with a nice mix of flowers, minerality and fruit, is followed on by a fine texture, laced with lovely mix of black and red fruits, expansive tannins and great length. A great marriage of controlled power and focused elegance. Tasted 10.2012
