Jose de Sousa Private Collection Sarigo 2021
Jose de Sousa Private Collection Sarigo 2021
A very fine, lifted elegant bouquet, with fresh, delicate green flower stem aromas. Creamy smooth texture, laced with citrus acidity, then very fine skin tannins follow to lengthen finish. Develops broader, fresher brighter florals with more air. This followed a 10-day ferment in talha, kept on skins for 3 weeks then sent to stainless steel tanks until bottling. Only 600 liters produced and deemed a private expression with no makeup or additions. Sarigo is an ancient, nearly extinct local variety that was planted in 1952/53 era ‘José de Sousa Vineyard’. Because Sarigo is not an officially sanctioned grape variety in Alentejo’s modern era, it can’t be approved as a Vinho de Talha DOC wine. This unfortunate Catch 22 situation has destined this wine for a Private Collection bottling (Tasted 11.21). Retasted 11.22 it has developed buttery notes with a filled-out texture infused with ripe melon and citrus fruits. Elegantly styled it retains a fresh, clean finish. 96
