Quinta do Serrado
This is a relatively large volume producer that delivers internationally influenced Dao styles for very fair prices. The vineyards are located in one of Dao’s cooler subregions and spread across a range of heights (370-500 meters above sea level) offering a wide range of climatic possibilities.
An interesting aside is that Quinta do Serrado own a ruined medieval monastery Mosteiro do Santo Sepulcro (founded by returning monks from the Crusades). The hope is to eventually restore and establish this as their tasting room.
The owner has a background growing apples and pears in southwest Dao near Tabua and also produces Douro wines on 130 hectares there. Quinta do Serrado’s estates are located near Penalva do Castelo, a region known for fresh, aromatic reds. Ten hectares are in 60-70 year old vines (50% Touriga/30% Jaen and 20% Roriz) surrounding the winery, with the remaining 70 steeply terraced above the DaoRiver. Although not certified, the vineyards are farmed organically.
