Marof Wines

Marof Breg Cuvee 2019 13.5% An organically grown blend of Laski Riesling, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, macerated on grape skins for five days, then fermented with wild yeasts in 3,000 litre barrels and further aged for 15 months on lees. Fairly neutral, mineral flavors and aromas, with just a hint of Sauvignon Blanc’s grassiness to add edge. A nicely balanced, white wine with lovely balancing acidity and a bone dry finish.. 15.5/20

Marof Bodonci Sauvignon Blanc 2016 14% Organically grown and macerated on grape skins for five days, then fermented with wild yeasts in 500 litre barrels and further aged for 18 months. An aromatic mixture of fresh straw, black current leaves, lees driven umami and mineral notes. Creamy smooth in the mouth, white pepper tinged currant flavors ending in a long tapered finish with fine acidity to balance. A very ripe, higher alcohol Sauvignon style that retains a high degree of elegance and finesse. 18.5/20

Marof Bodonci Sauvignon Blanc 2017 14% Organically grown and macerated on grape skins for five days, then fermented with wild yeasts in 500 litre barrels and further aged for 18 months. More tropically fruited than 2016 with a mix of pineapple/banana, dried straw herbal characters.Fuller bodied, fleshier, but also with a tighter, firmer finish. Even bigger and bolder than 2016, but still with a degree of elegance. 18/20

Marof Breg Chardonnay Cuvee 2017 14.5% Organically grown and macerated on grape skins for five days, then fermented with wild yeasts in 500 litre barrels and further aged for 24 months on lees. Opens with mineral aromas, carries on through a fine buttery texture, that’s quite viscous on edge of oily mouthfeel. Wine ends in a long fine, meltaway finish. Although a higher alcohol riper style with softer acidity, structure is firmed up with fine barrel/skin tannins. 17/20

Marof Kramarovic Chardonnay Cuvee 2017 14.5% From organically grown 45 year old vines with grapes macerated on skins for twenty days! Fermented with wild yeasts in 3,000 litre barrels and further aged for 22 months on lees. 45yoV This is a whoppingly big, high octane Chardonnay style. Full of leesy, malty aromas and driven by an alcohol laden texture. It is dense, powerful and ends in a long, firmly structured finish. 17/20

Marof Silvaner 2017 14% This an unusual Silvaner style. A grape more normally at home in cooler climates that shape it into something more light bodied, crisp and floral. Marof’s version is larger scale with mineral, dried straw/herbal and spirity characters and a full bodied, alcohol charged texture with firm acidity. 15/20

Marof Mackovci Modra Frankinja (Blaufrankisch) 2016 13.5% Tasted from a barrel sample. A large scale red driven by ultra-ripe fruit full of dried fruit, prune, plums and licorice characters. It’s quite massive in the mouth and structured with firm, very substantial, but relatively fine tannins. 15.5/20

Marof Mackovci Modra Frankinja (Blaufrankisch) 2015 13.5% Matured one year in small barriques then moved to 3,000 litre barrels. The wine showed peppery, floral, licorice, fresh berry and wild blackberry aromas, which followed on in quite juicy, highly concentrated blackberry flavors. Structurally it displayed very fine, long grain tannins. It remains a very young, very serious wine suggesting a long life ahead of it. All that said, after airing I observed a degree of vinegar-like V.A (volatile acidity) that made it difficult to drink. Perhaps it is a one off vintage or a bad bottle.
